2 1/2 Years Later... or, As This Was Happening...

The storm broke over Southhaven just as a rider galloped through the North Gate. Aidan Mors watched as the rider dismounted, throwing the reins at a stable hand as he ran inside. There would be a meeting soon, no doubt; Few couriers would be out today unless their message was of the utmost importance.

Aidan turned back to his desk to resume the letter for his friend in Hillshire. It was difficult to remain concentrated, as unpleasant thoughts drifted through his mind. Did war break out on the Eastern Front? The barbarians had been more active in the passing weeks. Aidan's mind raced. Perhaps the fever had broken out along the coast; It always struck there first. Unable to calm his mind, Aidan rose and returned to the window. The rain pounded at the garden, raindrops smashing into the flowers as if attempting to beat them to the ground.

As expected, it was not long before his study of the downpour was interrupted by a knock on his door. “Enter,” Aidan beckoned.

“Forgive me for disturbing you, Your Grace,” the servant said as he opened the door, “There is a meeting in the Great Hall. I have been told there is trouble in the north and that your presence is required as soon as possible.”

“Yes of course. I shall be there immediately.” Aidan continued to stare out the window as the servant closed the door behind him. The north,he mused, at least that rules out war. He let out a sigh and set off for the Great Hall.
